Buzzing Around
Hello Kiddies,

There's few times when I really get excited about a musical project. This is one of them. Just got the live debut from Sammy Hagar and the new band he put together with Jason Bonham called 'The Circle'. Zeppelin, Montrose, and Van Halen (um, I mean Van Hagar) classics from beginning to end. Yes please. Right NOW!

Check out this killer set! I'd say that it's much better than the recent VH Live set from the Tokyo Dome with Diamond Dave.

There's Only One Way To Rock
Rock Candy
Good Times Bad Times
Poundcake
I Can't Drive 55
When It's Love
Whole Lotta Love
Little White Lie
When The Levee Breaks
Moby Dick
Why Can't This Be Love
Finish What Ya Started
Heavy Metal
Best of Both Worlds
Right Now
Rock and Roll
Dreams

Montrose were basically considered the American counterpart to Led Zeppelin at the time so hearing those songs back to back is pretty damn cool. I'm gonna have to catch these guys on the road. They just sound that good. Jason even joked that you might call it Red Zeppelin! That's catchy! ;)

Take that Dave!

Hello Kiddies,

Let's give up the pretense that I'll ever leave this place for good. It will probably be a final fade out than a flare up. In the meantime, I won't put away my soapbox just yet. May has been okay with a certain amount of Spring fever and in step. I was sidelined with a head cold and allergies to beat the band a week or so ago and we have seemingly gotten other health woes under control and our insurance issues settled. Is that enough? No but we'll take it. May is a big KISSTory month with four major albums that had May release dates; Dynasty (1979), Unmasked (1980), Revenge (1992), and KISS Alive III (1993). There was a chapter in my own personal KISSTory as well.

Today's the 35th Anniversary of Unmasked, which is a little regarded but fun little gem in the band's catalog. It took them in a very poppy direction as they were honing their sensibilities of contemporaries like The Knack and Styx. We'll diverge from the obvious with today's video, with a song that's been singing to our situation a bit more lately. Fun fact: I originally owned this album on 8-Track, and am now listening to it on an iPod. Ain't format changes grand? :)

Hello Kiddies,

What do those two things have in common? Both were things I had a passion for that now are largely irrelevant.
I was watching the replay of the latest heavyweight title fight (which I missed live because I forgot it was on) and it was an underwhelming affair. I wrote the following on my Facebook page.
"Coming in a little late to the game on ‪#‎KlitschkovsJennings‬ as I only watched the replay the other day. I wanted to believe that there was a credible, dynamic, American Heavyweight Champion to capture the public's interest and imagination waiting in the wings. Despite his underdog story though, Bryant Jennings wasn't it, or even close. I think he was pushed into this way too fast, but honestly either you have it or you don't and Jennings clearly didn't. Klitschko will probably hold the title until he decides to retire, and the greatest title in the world (with the Sport of Kings in general) will continue to it's journey into irrelevancy."

Aside from an occasional locked entry, I really can't see myself blogging with the same fervor I once did. I looked up to folks here like theferrett, but even that isn't enough to get me really motivated. So to my adoring public (all three of you still reading), I bid you adieu. So a dozen or so years, thousands of entries, comments, later, it's not a farewell but a thank you. Besides, didn't a few bands we know do farewell tours and then make a comeback? ;) Maybe we'll start using computers again instead of smartphones. See yah round the interwebs kids!

Hello Kiddies,

Things are pretty static here, recovering from the financial and emotional toll of my illness has taken it's toll. I'm trying to keep positive in light of the current situations some of which are improving, others not so much. There's a locked Fetlife entry that needs to be reposted here but it will keep til I can. Wrestlemania is this weekend and that will provide some much needed distraction. Some sad news for the metal community last week when Twisted Sister drummer AJ Pero passed away suddenly due to a heart attack. There's no secret of my love for TS of course as I have seen the band many times. I got to meet AJ a few times and he was a sweetheart of a guy. My Heart goes out to the guys in TS and his family. This was my fave song by the reunited Twisted Sister and appropriate for AJ, who was indeed a hero.

Hello Kiddies,

We had a frozen February here in the HSB, and dear God do I wish the only thing I had to talk about was the weather.
Last Tuesday Kalita left for a few days and I made myself a nutrituous dinner of yogurt and a PB&J Sandwich and actually went to bed early to preserve my strength for the day ahead. I would need it.

Hello Kiddies,

Things are pretty dormant here in the HSB, and it's mostly been abandonded for other social media hwoever we couldn't leave a momentous occasion unmentioned.

February 6th would have been Bob Marley's 70th Birthday and the Marley Estate has a whole year worth of celebrations planned to commemorate the life and Legacy of the Hon. Robert Nesta Marley OM.

The #Share1Love charity campaign kicked of on the official website, and a previously unreleased live performance will be out later this month.
While it's been known by reggaephiles and Marley enthusiasts for a while, the general public has now become much more familiar with his life and the fact that his tragic and untimely passing was completely preventable. But, I suppose like other artists of similar fates, he was here to put his footprint on the world and then leave a legacy for others to follow. I think he did a good job. Happy Birthday Bob, Jah Live!

Here's a classic video featuring Marley's two major passions, music and football!

Hello Kiddies,

I've started and discarded more than a dozen LJ entries over the past few months, I guess I'm just having trouble enthusiastically expressing myself. It is what it is I suppose. 2014 was not what I hoped it would be, nor was the year before. I doubt the coming one will break that trend. Never the less we'll keep our hopes high. Have a Happy New Year kids, be safe and be good.

Hello Kiddies,

Was Halloween really that long ago? I often wonder how to recover my writing voice when things get quiet. Too much bad news in the air. I'm focused a lot on myself recently.

A month or so ago, I checked myself in for a psych eval, and that was actually non traumatic and relatively unremarkable. I make diagnosed with Type II Bipolar, which makes sense and am now taking different meds (Depakote is in, Effexor is out). I like my new therapist, and as always it's a continual process. There's more that I may write privately but that's all I have right now.

Happy Holidays folks.

Hello Kiddies,

Life here in the HSB has been enough of a horror show that we don't really have to recant scary thrills. So on this Halloween Friday night I'm sitting at home with my dearest darling and our furry children having a quiet night at home. Tomorrow we vote on our Union Contract for the next three years and this week was insanely busy with customers ordering en masse in fear of an impending strike. Truthfully I doubt it will come to that as things are relatively stable. Everybody's working, we haven't lost any lines, and general asshattery has been on a minimum from both management and labor. It was my first week back after my unscheduled vacation in upper Westchester. More on that later. In good news, the Scott Ian Swearing Words DVD and KISS Love Gun Deluxe Edition came out this week.

Since we're talking about the job, here's a childhood favorite that's scary for all the wrong reasons. :) Happy Halloween folks, candy's on sale tomorrow.

Hello Kiddies,

It's a slow news week so here's some fun. I had a lot or records like this when I was a kid. I'm tempted to buy one on eBay if they weren't so damned expensive.

One classic I did have from that era was 'Dracula: Terror in the Snow!'

If you're feeling scarily nostalgic, you can download that, Werewolf By Night, and Man-Thing on WFMU's Beware of the Blog!

Dear Flagg,

I can't believe it's been five years since you left us. I always think about you at this time of year, TES Election season, when the drama and politics are at their finest. We used to have so much fucking fun. You have to see the bunch we have on the board now, they do the job good enough, but they're not us. Those few years we spent together on the board were a really great time, and with the exception of maybe Catelynn, I probably enjoyed serving with you more than anybody. We plotted nefariously over sushi, and joked about wresting and bad films. I remember when we saw House of 1000 Corpses together and you were ridiculously underwhelmed. I loved it and you were immensely amused at that fact. Robert always thought highly of you and told tales of Industrial Strength Comics, and fun days.
We weren't close friends, but close enough. We had a shitload of respect for one another, and in the end that's what really matters. Sometimes I wish you were still here, to share your unique views and nefarious opinions with the style, grace and intelligence that only you possessed. And sometimes I wish you were here to kick ass with those shiny spurred boots. I knew that night when I met you that you were one of a kind. I have a copy of The Forked Tongue autographed from you. You wrote, 'To a damn good man.' I guess it takes one to know one. Thanks for your friendship, some fun times, and the memories. Because those Memories Can't Wait.

Love,
Pete

Everything is quiet
Everyone's gone to sleep
I'm wide awake

Hello Kiddies,

There have been things lately that have become more obvious to me. As most long time readers know, I have a great affinity for frogs, and occasionally identify myself in those terms. Sometimes however, that's to my detriment.

One of the most famous of Aesop's Fables is the Tale of the Scorpion and the Frog, in that tale the frog is like me, a trusting soul and a bit naive.

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream. The scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion says, "because if I sting you while you cross the stream, surely I shall drown ."

The frog is satisfied, and they set out. But in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, but has just enough time to gasp "Why? Now you shall surely drown!"

The scorpion replies: "Because it is my nature."

I have kept company with a lot of scorpions in my life, generally getting wiser to avoid the sting. Occasionally though, my trusting nature will betray me. Today I felt the particiularly painful sting of one scorpion I had asked back into my life. I can honestly say it took me by surprise, which made it all the more painful. There would probably be people who would say 'I told you so', the ones who I didn't listen to warning me about it. That's life though, sometimes you trust people and get stung. Will it make me change my trusting nature? Probably not, but I will always get better at avoiding the stings. Today's video has a similar story by one of our heroes, the former Romeo Blue, who probably got stung a few times in his life too.

Hello Kiddies,

That line is actually said with more of a smile than we've been allowed here in the HSB. There's a rant on the state of digital music and some other things swirling around my head dying to gnaw their way out, and they will eventually. I'm still torn on whether I want to express myself this way anymore, especially with so few people listening. In the meantime, I'm still here and so are you. Fall will be falling soon and I suspect we will too. I was fixing up my iTunes library and rediscovered this gem, which will always be a favorite.

Hello Kiddies,

The title of this post aptly sums up life here in the HSB, as it does for most folks. It's from the 1996 film 'The Birdcage' which is probably not only my favorite Robin Willliams performance, but also one of my most often watched and favorite films ever. I loved Dead Poets Society but it's too depressing to watch on a regular basis because you just want to change the ending. Patch Adams was sentimental drivel, even if it did hit you in the gut a few times. However, the one Williams character I loved instantly (and wished I could be like) was eternally suffering and quick witted club owner Armand Goldman, who delivered lines like "Are we crucifying someone tonight?" as they hung the oversized crucifix on the wall in an attempt to sanitize the apartment.

Everyone has their favorite RW character though, be it Mrs. Doubtfire, Patch Adams, John Keating, or Mork from Ork. It's a testament to a career that spanned more than four decades.

Like almost everyone else on Earth, Robin even had a connection to KISS, and who else would tell you about it? :)

Robin Williams recorded his first comedy album for KISS' label, Casablanca Records, and sat in with Gene and Ace for his infamous Robert Klein show appearance.

As you know unless you've been living under a rock for the last 48 hours, Williams was found dead in his home of a suicide attempt. His death touched millions and has opened up a wide dialogue over the subject of mental illness and suicide. Well it's about fucking time.
I think Williams may be the highest profile case of depression/addiction related suicide since Freddie Prinze.

When I went to work today people were talking about it, as well as on Facebook and other social media. They didn't know how it could happen, but I do. As long time friends and readers know, I attempted suicide several years ago. I know exactly what goes on when you are at the end of hope and death seems like the only answer. It doesn't matter how much money you have in the bank, how loved you are, or how often you get laid. Depression (and OCD, and BiPolar) lie to you and tell you it's not worth it anymore.

Still people don't get it. It took finding me in the bathroom unconscious with a machete and a bottle of vodka for my father to finally understand my mental illness was real. It took that for me to finally break though medical red tape and get to front of the line for treatment. For my coworkers to understand that I wasn't just 'crazy and lazy.' Some people still don't understand and they never will. I'd like to think that his death would open up more sympathy and support for people like us. Sadly, I don't think it's likely.

I still have bad days. I don't have my Mom or as much money anymore. I still have days where I think, you know what fuck it, I should just jump off a bridge. I make a bad decision, alienate someone, and think I'm not worth anything. Those are lies the sickness tells me, and that's what I tell myself as I wake up and make it through another day. I'll never touch as many people as Robin Williams, but I think I've touched a few that would miss me if I was gone. Even though there's nothing I want more than to see my Mom again, I know I have more to do on this mortal coil.

Rest in Peace Mr. Williams. You made the world an infinitely happier place. Too bad it couldn't make the one person that mattered happy enough to stay. I'll leave this on a positive note with the one thing you wanted us to do.

Be Happy.
